01 / The screens

Every screen we supply and install.

Motorised, tab-tensioned and manual casings, fixed and ALR frames, and portable stands from Big Shine and Grandview. Prices are retail per screen size, before GST and installation; sizes and specifications come from the catalog record.

Final size, casing position and drop are confirmed against the room before an order is placed. Speakers behind the screen? The Acoustic NanoMesh 4K fabric is available on the fixed frame and Grand tab-tension screens.

02 / Two briefs

Home and workplace rooms ask different questions.

Home cinema and living rooms

  • Seating distance and the widest image the wall can carry decide the diagonal; 16:9 suits most film and streaming sources.
  • Light control matters more than screen size. A darkened room supports a plain matte white surface; a lit room usually needs an ALR surface or a brighter projector.
  • Ceiling height and any pelmet or curtain track set whether a motorised casing can drop the image to eye level.

Offices, schools and worship spaces

  • The furthest seat sets the minimum image height for readable text; check it before choosing a diagonal.
  • Whiteboards, windows and speakers compete for the front wall, which is where a motorised or manual casing earns its place.
  • Control and power points, wall plate location and integration with room AV are settled with the mounting position.

03 / Size and measurement

Diagonal, visible area, outer envelope.

Screens are sold by diagonal, watched by visible area and installed by outer envelope. A 100-inch 16:9 screen has a visible width of roughly 2.2 metres; the casing or frame adds to that, and a motorised casing also needs drop above the image to bring it down to eye level.

Size is chosen with the projector. Image width and throw ratio fix where the projector must sit, so a screen that fits the wall may still not fit the ceiling. The throw distance guide has a planning calculator, and the screen sizes guide explains how the figures are quoted.

04 / Brands

Big Shine and Grandview.

Big Shine screens cover the everyday range: tripod, pull-up and fast-fold portables, manual and integrated motorised casings, a large tab-tensioned motorised screen for halls, and fixed frames. Grandview supplies the integrated and tab-tensioned motorised families, an ALR fixed frame for ultra-short-throw projectors and a motorised tabletop ALR screen.

Fabric layers, motor ratings, masking and mounting details are manufacturer specifications and stay on each product page, where the size table for every family is listed. For speakers behind the screen, the Acoustic NanoMesh 4K woven fabric is available on the fixed frame and Grand tab-tension screens.

05 / The brief

Five things that set the screen.

  1. Room dimensions. Width, depth and ceiling height, plus anything on the front wall or ceiling that the screen has to clear.
  2. Seating. Nearest and furthest viewing positions and roughly how many people sit there.
  3. Light. Windows, downlights and whether the room can be dimmed while the screen is in use.
  4. Projector. Existing model and position if there is one, or whether the projector is chosen with the screen.
  5. Content. Presentations, video, film or a mix. This sets the aspect ratio and how much of the image must stay readable.

Before you buy a projection screen.

Motorised or manual?

Manual casings cost less to install and need no power point, but every use is a reach for the handle. Motorised casings suit rooms where the screen sits above a whiteboard or is used often, and can be driven from the room control or a trigger from the projector.

When is a tab-tensioned screen worth it?

When the image is wide, the projector is off-centre, or the source is high resolution enough for waviness in the fabric to show. On modest images in a controlled room a plain motorised screen is usually adequate.

What does screen gain mean for my room?

Gain compares how a surface reflects light with a reference white. Higher gain narrows the useful viewing angle; it is not a free brightness upgrade. The screen gain guide explains how to read the figure against the seating plan.

Do ultra-short-throw projectors need a special screen?

They need a flat surface first, because a steep projection angle exaggerates any wave in the fabric. In lit rooms a UST-specific ALR surface is the usual pairing. The UST guide walks through the checks.

How are screen sizes quoted?

Usually by the diagonal of the visible area. The casing or frame adds to the overall width and height, so the outer envelope is confirmed against the wall before ordering.
