Screen gain describes how a screen material reflects projected light relative to a reference condition. It is a material comparison, not a promise that a screen will be brighter in every seat, and it should not be treated as a whiteboard equivalence.

Brightness is not the whole picture

Windows, luminaires, wall reflections, projector output, image size and seating position all affect perceived contrast and uniformity. A material that appears bright from the centre may not be the best choice for a wide audience.

Check for hot-spotting and uniformity

Hot-spotting is a visible brightness concentration rather than an abstract gain number. Inspect the screen from the nearest, furthest and widest seats with the intended projector and content where possible.

Choose the screen and projector together

  • Record image width, aspect ratio and the nearest, furthest and widest viewing positions.
  • Describe daylight, luminaires, blackout and reflective surfaces.
  • Confirm projector model, lens, operating mode and intended image size.
  • Request manufacturer data for gain, viewing angle, half-gain angle or ambient-light claims.
  • Check the material's surface, tension and flatness for the chosen projector geometry.
  • View the proposed system from the seats that matter rather than relying on a centre-seat number.
